Let’s talk about freedom of speech

There’s been some things on my mind concerning freedom of speech and censorship lately. I’ve decided to write about after some very recent events. Let’s look at a few things.

Ok, so I saw a post over at Atlas Shrugs (one of the most bodacious babes of the blogosphere) about the censorship on You Tube. It concerned one of her excellent vlogs (video blogs) and the Democrats. Seems some people complained to You Tube and the took the video offline. They don’t say exactly why but they refer her to the terms of service. Having seen the vlog and read the terms of service a few times I can’t see why other then You Tubes continued left leaning.

Today I also see, over at Michelle Malkin’s site (another bodacious babe of the blogospere), posted about the U.S. Military’s crackdown on the military blogs (milblogs). Seems they don’t like some of the things being said from the front line.

The U.S. Army has ordered soldiers to stop posting to blogs or sending personal e-mail messages, without first clearing the content with a superior officer, Wired News has learned. The directive, issued April 19, is the sharpest restriction on troops’ online activities since the start of the Iraq war. And it could mean the end of military blogs, observers say.

Some are saying that this is because of what some of those brave men and women are saying about the Democratic leadership right now. Remember the military, as a force, is supposed to be non-partisan.

Finally, there was this article about Don Imus. I haven’t written about Imus and what he said, on purpose. It’s been dissected across the net by much better writers then I. However, when taken in the context of the bigger picture here in America I would be remiss not to talk about it.

Imus has hired Martin Garbus, a New York-based attorney at the law firm Davis & Gilbert who is widely recognized as one of the country’s most able First Amendment lawyers. Time Magazine, for one, has called him “legendary, one of the best trial lawyers in the country.” He’s successfully represented the comedian Lenny Bruce against criminal charges on First Amendment grounds, and the writer Robert Sam Anson in a lawsuit filed by Walt Disney trying to halt the publication of a book critical of the media giant.

Rosie O’Donnel goes on the nationally syndicated TV Show “The View” and consistently calls for Bush’s impeachment and claims that the government was responsible for the deaths of 2996 innocent Americans among other vile slanderous things towards the conservatives in this country. She gets offered another contract but turns it down because it wasn’t enough money. Speculation is rampant she will get a show of her own again soon.

Now let’s look at this. Atlas has a post banned from You Tube where she blasts the democrats, the military bloggers are censored for decrying Harry Reid and the democrats quitting on the war against terror, and Imus gets fired for picking on a group that made the largest voting base of the democrats angry and Rosie ODonnel claiming our President is a murderer. Combine this with the conservative view that the liberal left owns the main stream media and you get a fair idea of where this censorship is all coming from. This is especially important in the months leading up to the 2008 presidential election. Consider this the opening salvos or a testing of the lefts media might before the showdown. Still doubt?

Consider a few things, right now there are a bunch of videos on You Tube of US soliders being burned in effigy, islamic snipers killing american soldiers, and people claiming that Bush and co. killed 2996 American citizens in some plot to go after Iraq. You have Dick “we ran from Somalia, lets run from Iraq” Murtha calling General Petraeus a “political hack”, and finally the NY Post reports that Roseanne Barr is the front runner to replace Rosie Odonnel who is an even bigger leftard nut job then Odonnel.

I think the zionists made a huge mistake when they factioned the left in germany. They ended up trading jewish lives for land, instead of standing together with the socialist factions that opposed hitler. Zionism was the last nail in the casket of European jewry. The arab’s protection is the only reason any holy site remains in israel. The jews line up to stone women who try to access those sites. I saw it with my own eyes. The arabs do not invade other countries. The israelis do. I am sick of israel and I am sick of zionists. They are propped up by evangelical christians who cannot wait for the arabs to kill them so that their genocidal war god whom they misname jesus can come back.

There is a saying “evil wins when good people stand by and do nothing”. While many on the right are railing against things like this, too many are ignorant of what is going on. These things are really just the testing of media power by the left. Checking to see what they can get away with and what the American masses will ignore. It doesn’t bode well for those of us who love this country. Comments very very welcome.

Freedom of speech as stated by the constitution is basically to protect us from the government restricting our speech. Freedom of speech does not exsist in a private company like YouTube. Is it crappy and stupid? Yes. Is it wrong? Yes. But not illegal. The best way to combat it is to do everything you can to bypass the press and private companies and put out said videos yourself.

As for the soldiers. Thats a much tougher story. Soldiers do not have freedom of speech, either. One would hope that they would be allowed to express their political opinions, but they dont really have the right. Sad, eh?

Freedom of speech applies to more then just the government making laws. Freedom of speech does apply to basic rights. In addition, check the terms of service, there was no breaking of the terms of service, not one. It’s purely another example of uneven application of political correctness and censorship. Think about it, snipers killing american soldiers and us soldiers getting burned in effigy…allowed…1 hot chick railing against the democrats violates the TOS? There is no even handed application here.
Soldiers do have the right to complain/talk to their state representatives and to blow the whistle on wrong things. Blogging is this generations version of writing home in many cases.

Private businesses do not have to be even handed. the constitution applies to the government intruding on your rights to say what you want. Private businesses can do whatever they want within their business. Not saying its right, but saying they are completly within their rigfhts. By removing what they want, they are expressing their own freedom of speech, too. The trick is to ‘punish’ them for doing it.

Dont get all lefty on me. Freedom of speech goes for both parties. It does not give one freedom of the consequences of your speech, tho…

You’re missing the point, I’m not talking about the restricting any one’s rights to speech. What I’m pointing out is the disparity that is taking hold in the media realm right now. Look at what speech is getting restricted! It’s right wing speech that is being restricted, and now the Dem’s are trying to bring back the “fairness doctrine” which would effectively shut down right wing talk radio (the only media realm where conservatives rule). I’m for the freedom of speech, I’ve even shifted off the position slightly about flag burning (based on our talks) but what is going on now is more of an issue of conservatives being silenced. Unless we speak out now about it, our voices will not be able to be heard a year or 2 from now.
