Draft Fred Thompson for President?

posted in American Politics |

Ala over at Blonde Sagacity has been pushing for Fred Thompson to enter the GOP primary and make a grab at the Presidency. Here’s some info from the Wikipedia on him.

Fred Dalton Thompson (born August 19, 1942) is an American lawyer, actor and former Republican Senator from Tennessee. In addition to acting, he is currently a visiting fellow for the American Enterprise Institute, researching national security and intelligence (China, North Korea, and Russia.) He is also a special program host and senior analyst for ABC News Radio and fills in for Paul Harvey.

You probably know him from Law and Order or maybe Barbarians at the Gate. She’s gone so far as to make a web site trying to get people to draft Thompson to run, over here. Since I happen to think that Ala is a pretty smart cookie, and I know next to nothing about Fred Thompson (other then his acting) I started to research him some.

There seems to be quite a groundswell among the blogging world pushing for him to enter the race. Over at Reformed Chicks Blabbing they are hoping he joins the race, and there is another site trying to draft him to run here. It’s a growing movement, just look at the google for draft fred thompson. Still, I’m not one just to jump on a band wagon because alot of people are, I did some research into his positions on things while in the Senate. Here is a link to a basic voting record for him.

I’m still pushing for Newt to announce he’s joining the race, but I can’t help to think about how good the last actor the Republican party nominated for President and how well he turned out. Perhaps alot of these people who are trying to get him to run should email each other and see about forming a more cohesive strategy to convince him and the rest of the people on the fence.

I tried to tell the draft thompson guys they need to start a blogroll but they haven’t done it yet (as far as I know). I think a blogroll will demonstrate that there is support for this movement. It will show how many bloggers are serious about it.

I like Newt and would support him but he’s got so much baggage. I thought we could have a fresh start with a likable candidate. Wouldn’t that be a nice change? :-)

I like the idea but I think in today’s day and age every candidate has baggage. i.e. Hillary has Bill, Obama has issues with the madrassa/age etc, Rudy has the divorces, and Romney has the flip flopping. I’d like to have a candidate with fresh ideas and the ability to communicate them. Just found out today there is a draft newt movement so will be posting about that soon. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Fred Thompson would be a great candidate, I think. Not sure if he has any weird baggage, though.

The problem in today’s day and age, is that everyone has baggage. If not legit baggage then baggage that will be created by his/her oponents and or the media.

I understand that Thompson and McCain have close ties and Thompson might reject
the idea of going against McCain in a run for the Presidency. But look at it this
way, Thompson President, McCain Vice-President. There would be a ground swell of
support for Thompson and nail the lid shut with McCain as V.P. Both great Americans
    and smart.

    Thompson, it’s your time.

    Regards,

    Randy

Fred would probably be our last hope to save this nation. None of the other candidates in eather party would make a dent in the constant move to a Socialist Government.

Fred Thompson is THE man for the job. I’m a Conservative and have not been excited about any of the so called front runners for the Republicans. Believe me, if Fred Thompson decides to run, this will throw a real wrench in the entire election. Democrats said this morning that Fred Thompson is the ONLY candidate that they fear. No baggage, good looks, good debate skills, true conservative, excellent history in politics. He only dropped out in 2002 because of the sudden death of his daughter, NOT as the MSM is saying, to go into acting. He had been acting in movies, etc. since the 1980’s.

    This is a good thing!

It is starting to look more and more like Thompson is going to run. While he has voted consistently conservative I’d be worried if his platform was nothing but old conservative ideals. I’d like to see the 08 nominee bring fresh ideas to the table. I’d still like to know Thompsons position on Islamic terrorism and illegal immigrations a little more fully since I feel that those are the 2 biggest issues facing America going forward.

Fred Thompson for President is absolutely the most exciting prospect I’ve heard! He CAN WIN! I do NOT like either Rudy or McCain due to their liberal voting record and I do not trust either one. I would support Fred Thompson with generous financial support. PLEASE! RUN FRED!

Texas is under a massive and coordinated invasion aided and abetted by our top elected officials kowtowing to greedy businesses. McCain is not acceptable and will not be elected in Texas nor is Giuliani with their Pro-Amnesty Bush/Kennedy temporary guest worker agenda. Either of these two men will force a third party and hence a Democrat will be elected. Bless his heart Mike Huckabee – our neighboring lovable governor is so wrong on this issue as well….and not acceptable to Texas….ditto Brownback…ditto a Mass. Former governor.

It is a rare election for President that does not have Texas on the side of a winner. Fred Thompson can be a winner with his stand on this issue as well as other strong conservative beliefs… and has the national star power to counter the money lined up by the other candidates – Democrat and Republican

Fred we need you….RUN…!. Your country needs you…RUN…!

It is a relief to know that Fred Thompson is even considering
a run for the presidency. The rest of the field of candidates
are just not that appealing. Fred Thompson is the man for the
job. Let’s all show our support and get this ball rolling.
Let’s make sure that we show him that America needs him!!!

    YES! YES! YES!
That would be GREaT if Fred entered the race. We don’t have a decent candidte that can win at thispouint. Huckabee is good but I don’t think he can win!

Fred needs to renounce support for McCain Feingold. That’s the only baggage I’m aware of, but respect for the Constitution is a prerequisite that most of the candidates we’re offered by the media as “electable” are as badly socialist as the Democrats.
I want to support Sen. Thompson but he must address this deal-breaker and do it convincingly.
It wouldn’t be hard to believe he was caught up in the excitement at the time- after all, the Republican dominated government and most of us who were only paying attention to the media though “reform” was a pretty good idea. McCain can’t claim ignorance, he wrote this attempt to repeal the First Amendment– but I thought it sounded good back then, I could believe Sen. Thompson if he came out harshly against it now… and that would leave him an outstanding conservative candidate from all perspectives, I think.

I’d wait till he actually announces. He’ll need to raise money fast though since the 1st “super primary” is in Feb.

The man has integrity, an undeniable magnetic personality, honest & forthright decision making, moral integrity, & outstanding character. Oh, one last thing…grit. Our numbers grow every day, I cannot imagine him not running. I just wish California would’nt have moved their primary date to Feb. 5…that really was underhanded.

During the last presidential election, I remarked to my wife that this country needed a change from the usual choices we are given. She asked who would that could be. We happened to catch Fred Thompson on the tv. I pointed to him and said, “That guy oughta be the next president.” C’mon Fred, this country needs a real choice!

The evolution of this thread is amazing. It parallels what has actually occurred for the Thompson sorta campaign. It started with an idea. Now, thousands of people have expressed support for across the country. While he has yet to announce, I’m happy to report that there are volunteer organizations in 25 states (more every day) that coordinate nationally. Fred will not need a big lead time to get state organizations up and running once he does announce.
